Louis’ Little Black Book – Papier by Judy

Louis’ Little Black Book

featuring Vancouver’s best & brightest event professionals who share our dedication to excellence

We have a number of vendors here at Louis Gervais Fine Foods that are near and dear to our hearts, but this one is extra special.  The very talented Judy Phan of Papier by Judy took a chance and sent us a message on Facebook inviting us to like her page, not long after tasting our food at one of the local wedding shows we participated in last year.  We, of course, connected back with hopes of working with her in the near future.  That opportunity came quickly when Nicole and I began making preparations for Louis Gervais Fine Foods’ 15th anniversary celebration at the Vancouver Art Gallery. We decided to invite Judy to come on board as a sponsor to promote her incredible design skills and promote her stationary.  What a match made in heaven! Judy spoiled us; spending countless hours, accommodating numerous revisions perfecting our invite, menu cards and brochures.  We love working with her; she is as sweet as she is talented.

Introduce yourself and your company
My name is Judy Phan, owner and designer of Papier by Judy. Papier by Judy is a stationery company that provides customs designs, fine cards and full stationery suites for a variety of events. I specialize in book style and boxed invitations and am constantly sourcing new materials to provide our wedding clients with a unique product. From hand wrapped fabrics to specialty papers, all of the designs showcase different printing techniques including letterpress, embossing, flocking, foiling, etc.

How did you get started? What have been some challenges & breakthroughs?
I had been doing graphic design work in the advertising industry for years. Then I got married and having designed my own stationery suite, I fell in love with the wedding industry. From there, Papier by Judy grew organically.

Challenges: trying to connect with the right clients. The industry is a very competitive market with many other stationery companies with varying ranges (both style and pricing). It just makes me so happy when others appreciate the attention I put into all the details of each piece. Yes it seems a little nutty how excited I can get over… PAPER!  I guess the company is aptly named.

Breakthroughs: all the amazing connections I have made with different vendors in all aspects of the business. Everyone is an artist within their own field and it’s amazing seeing everyone at their craft. You see all the dedication and passion that is put into other people’s special days. It’s inspiring!

What types of events do you do?
Weddings are my specialty but I also do stationery for corporate events. Basically any event worth celebrating needs stationery of some sort. Through paper, design and printing, a host can communicate the emotion and style of their particular event.

What is your most popular product/feature?
Foil hot stamping has been the most popular feature on my invitations. It can take a plain flat card to a new level. The shine adds depth and a visual feature that draws the eye in. It gives a richness to the whole piece. Gold and silver have been the most popular foil colours but I am able to produce many other colors to meet any color scheme.

What has been your favorite (or most rewarding, most unique) event to work on to date?
I would have to say a wedding I had the pleasure of working on in 2013. This wedding was broken down into 3 events spanning 2 weekends with each event needing it’s own stationery suite in line with that particular theme. Plus this event allowed me to showcase my newest line of hand wrapped silk invitations. It’s actually currently featured in the Winter and Spring 2014 issue of Wedluxe Magazine (Pg 72-76). Any party that can end with a bright and energetic display of fireworks is a party to celebrate indeed!

What is one tip that you would give a client when they are choosing their vendors?
Go with who you feel is right. It’s your big day and you deserve to have the party of a lifetime! Don’t stress about the details, you’ve chosen us to deal with it all for you. It is such an important day and you are entrusting us to make it special. The connection needs to be there.

What is your favorite food to eat at events?
Canapés of any kind. It allows one to get a bite of everything! Then obviously you go back for more of your favorites!
